Invitation to Participate in PhD Research: Businesses in the Cornwall National Landscape

I

Research Project

Planning, Social Capital, and Sustainable Business in the Cornwall National Landscape

Businesses operating within protected landscapes occupy a unique position. They contribute significantly to local economies, employment, heritage, tourism, and community identity, while also operating within planning and environmental frameworks designed to conserve and enhance “natural beauty”.

This PhD research explores how planning and governance operate within the Cornwall National Landscape (formerly the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), and how relationships between businesses, communities, planners, and institutions influence sustainable development outcomes.

The study is particularly interested in understanding:

  • Experiences of running a business within a protected landscape
  • Interactions with planning systems and environmental regulation
  • How collaboration, local networks, and community relationships shape business opportunities
  • The challenges and opportunities associated with sustainability, conservation, tourism, housing, infrastructure, and landscape protection
  • How innovation, technology, local knowledge, and governance processes affect business resilience and growth

Invitation to Contribute a Case Study

The research is seeking businesses and organisations willing to contribute a short case study based on their experiences operating within the Cornwall National Landscape.

Case studies may include perspectives on:

  • Planning applications or development processes
  • Managing environmental or conservation requirements
  • Tourism and visitor pressures
  • Workforce and housing challenges
  • Community engagement and partnerships
  • Technological innovation or adaptation
  • Sustainable business practices
  • Land management or stewardship
  • Regulatory, governance, or funding experiences
  • Collaboration with local authorities, community groups, or landscape partnerships

Businesses of all sizes and sectors are welcome, including tourism, farming, fisheries, food production, creative industries, renewable energy, hospitality, heritage, retail, and land-based enterprises.

 Confidentiality and Anonymity

Participation can be fully anonymised if preferred.
Individual businesses, participants, or commercially sensitive information will not be identified without explicit consent.

The research follows university ethical guidelines, and all information will be treated confidentially and securely.

Why Participate?

Your experience will help contribute to a better understanding of:

  • How protected landscapes function in practice
  • How planning systems affect rural and coastal businesses
  • The role of local relationships and governance in supporting sustainable enterprise
  • What can future policy and governance within National Landscapes better balance conservation with thriving local economies?

The findings will contribute to academic research, policy discussions, and practical recommendations for protected landscape governance in Cornwall and beyond.

What Participation Involves

Participation can be flexible and may include:

  • A short, informal conversation
  • A semi-structured interview
  • A written case study contribution
  • Follow-up clarification where appropriate

Time commitments can be tailored to suit participants.
